Middlezoy Rovers 1, Shirehampton 3

MIDDLEZOY Rovers’ poor run of home results continued on Saturday at the Aerodrome, as they lost out to visitors Shirehampton.

Playing with the breeze, Middlezoy failed to trouble the opposition keeper in the first 45 minutes, and were punished on the break by Scott Bamford after 25 minutes.

The home side fashioned five decent opportunities in the first half but nothing was on target.

Middlezoy had to be prepared to play against the wind after the break and not just lump it at the opposition, but they did not really do either and constantly found themselves under pressure as the ball was lifted back towards them from deep.

In search of an equaliser it was always going to be an important next goal, and it was not Zoy who got it.

After Mark Johnson made it 2-0, Danny Morne added a third to kill off the contest.

The hosts’ only shot on target resulted in a goal on 85 minutes, as Matt Connick cut inside and opened his body to find the bottom corner.

It was too little too late, and Zoy were glad to hear the final whistle.

Men of the match: Johnny Higgins and Charlie Lintell.

On Saturday, Zoy travel to Clevedon United in the Premier/Division 1 Cup (ko 3pm).

MIDDLEZOY Rovers Reserves enjoyed better fortunes in Division 3, as goals from Sam Hallett and Craig Wright earned them a 2-1 win at Banwell on Saturday.

This coming Saturday, Zoy Reserves host Welton Rovers Reserves in the Division 2 & 3 Cup (ko 3pm).

MIDDLEZOY Legends’ first outing this year was played on a lovely sunny morning at Langport on the 3G.

With the debut of a few 35-year-olds, hopes were high that some young legs would help the more senior players, and Chipper Chorley showed his intent from the start as he collected the ball 20 yards out and danced through the opposition to slot past the keeper.

The lead lasted a matter of minutes as an Ashcott midfielder fired into the top corner from 25 yards past Kevin Cornell.

After 30 minutes, the best move in the game involving Chris Fiddler, Craig Robinson, Nathan Hansford, Bob Kippen and Paul Hamblin finished with the latter sending a crisp finish into the far corner.

The legends then had a calamity moment as they gifted not one but two goals to trail 3-2 at half time.

Chris Fiddler was replaced by Matt Francis and James Leader replaced Jason ‘Busy’ Yeoman.

Zoy went hunting for an equaliser and kept the ball better as they pressed their possession advantage, but had nothing to show for it and got hit on the counter attack.

The introduction of the ‘Romford Pele’ lifted spirits as he made his 6ft space his very own.

Zoy fashioned a decent effort for the returning Jason Yeoman but his shot was more shin pad than foot; a few more efforts from range were created but nothing to trouble the Ashcott keeper.

It was a game played in good spirit and enjoyed by all.
