A TALENTED young gymnast from Bridgwater’s Quayside Trampoline & Gymnastics Club made headlines this weekend, winning gold at a major event in Birmingham.

Corey Walkes, from Bath, claimed top spot in the hotly-contested men’s age 17-21 trampoline final on Sunday at the 2018 Trampoline, Tumbling and Double Mini Trampoline British Championships at Arena Birmingham.

Corey, 17, said “It’s pretty mad to become British champion.

“I came to this competition hoping to sign off my junior career – I’ve been a junior for six years so it’s a great way to end the junior years.

“The atmosphere has been crazy and having all of my friends and family here is very special; that energy translated into my performance.

“I’m hoping to go senior for next year – fingers crossed!”

The major event saw over 500 participants from 80 clubs take part in the two-day gymnastics spectacular, with competitiors travelling from across the UK and more than 3,000 people attending the event – making it the most successful British Championships for the last five years.

The next major British Gymnastics event is the Gymnastics World Cup in Birmingham on Saturday, March 23, 2019 where the best nations in the world will take part - more information here.
