County Championship Division One - day two (close)

Yorkshire 292-7 v Somerset 399

JOSH Davey took four wickets - including two just before the close - as Somerset gained the upper hand on the second day of the County Championship clash against Yorkshire at Headingley.

Three wickets in eight balls early in the afternoon saw the hosts reduced to 119-5, but Tom Kohler-Cadmore (81) and Andrew Hodd (84*) combined to frustrate Somerset with a 173-run stand for the sixth wicket.

Earlier, the visitors were dismissed just one run shy of maximum batting points having resumed on 374-8.

Jack Brooks completed his five-fer against his future employers by removing Jamie Overton (8) before Jack Leach (9) fended David Willey into the slips with the score on 399.

Somerset started well with the ball, picking up two wickets before lunch as Lewis Gregory bowled Harry Brook (2) and Craig Overton claimed the key scalp of Kane Williamson, caught at gully by Leach for 18.

Gary Ballance (37) and Adam Lyth (45) added 59 for the third wicket before both fell in quick succession, the latter superbly caught by Marcus Trescothick low at second slip from the bowling of Josh Davey.

Davey then drew a leading edge from Jack Leaning (4) and held on to the routine return catch to leave the hosts wobbling, but Kohler-Cadmore and Hodd steadied the ship.

Hodd was first to his half-century, from 80 balls with nine fours, and the former Worcestershire batsman followed suit soon afterwards.

The pair took the score to 292 before Kohler-Cadmore was excellently caught behind the stumps by Steve Davies off Davey, who then pinned Matt Fisher in front without scoring from what proved to be the final ball of the day.

Davey finished the day with 4-53 from 17.4 overs, and Somerset - who lead by 107 - will hope to take the final three wickets quickly tomorrow morning before building a sizable advantage with the bat.

After play, Davey said: “Those last two wickets have got the momentum back in our favour, which is very pleasing.

“If we’re being hyper-critical, we didn’t bowl as well as we know we can as a unit. There were areas we did bowl well, but we didn’t keep the pressure on them.

“We’re still in a good position, nearly 120 ahead.

“There was a little bit of turn for Jack Leach, which is encouraging on day two. Hopefully he’ll come more into the game as the pitch gets older.

“There’s a long way to go. We know what we’ve got to do. If we perform to the best of our ability, hopefully we’ll get he win.”
