SOMERSET head coach Jason Kerr has hailed the "good feeling" around the side at the moment and insisted "this is only the start for this team."

The club have qualified for T20 finals day for the first time since 2012 and currently sit second in the County Championship, while earlier this week they also announced the signing of Yorkshire seamer Jack Brooks from next season.

Reflecting on Monday's Vitality Blast quarter-final victory at home to Nottinghamshire, Kerr told the County Gazette: “One of our strengths in the competition this season has been that people have stood up at different times, and we look a real unit.

James Hildreth came in at a difficult time for us and wrestled momentum back.

“Lewis Gregory hit the ball brilliantly, and we should not underestimate the role played by Tom Abell in that partnership.”

Notts began their chase well, only for Overton to wreak havoc and Max Waller to show his ability in the field, taking four catches.

Kerr added: “In the group stage it was fine to be chasing a total; but there’s a little more pressure knowing that finals day was on the line.

“When we posted our total, I felt Notts would need to do something special to beat us.”

Overall, Kerr is very happy with what he’s seen from the players this season.

“From my side it’s all very positive,” he said.

“We’ve shown unity, character and skill.

“Last week against Essex, Jack Leach rightly took the plaudits [for taking 8-85] but the whole unit stuck together.

“There’s a good feeling around the club, and everyone is celebrating everyone’s successes.

“It’s only the start of the journey for this team, but I’m pleased with how the players are going about it.”

There was more good news for Somerset fans this week with the confirmation that Brooks will join the club next season from Yorkshire.

He provides another option in the fast bowler department, especially given that England duty could come calling.

“We’re delighted to acquire [Brooks], as he’s a proven performer and will complement our attack,” said Kerr.

“We have a lot of ambitious players, and I am sure that Craig Overton, Jamie Overton and Lewis Gregory are destined for higher honours.”
