ENMORE Park Golf Club’s Lady Captain’s Day attracted a very large entry, with everyone entering into the spirit of the day and dressing up as pirates.

The day started with a golf buggy being appropriately decorated in order to take Jackie Bull, the lady captain, around the course.

Bull very generously dispensed tots of Baileys to the players – 63 pirates in all.

Halfway round, all of the pirates stopped for a chipping competition, which was won by Julie Blumgart, and also enjoyed welcome refreshments on another hot day.

The winners of the main competition were Tracey Clapp, Chris Lewis and Paula Travis with 85 points, and the runners-up were Karen Flanagan, Madge Wakefield and Sarah Blake with 84 points.

There was also a nine-hole competition that was won by Lyn Slocombe, Gwen Lovett and Lorna Parker with 37 points, ahead of runners-up Jenny Barden, Ann Whyte and Chris Pashley with 32.

All of the pirates returned to the clubhouse at 6pm – in different attire – for a delicious meal that was enjoyed by 72 members.

On Sunday the final of the Jubilee Salver, a foursomes match that pitted Mel Millar and Julie Ingram against Ruth MacLennan and Jill Simpson, was played.

After what was a very tight match, MacLennan and Simpson won – one up on the 18th green.

Enmore’s Joe Young has qualified for the televised finals of the American Golf Junior Championship, scoring 48 points at Glamorganshire Golf Club.

With the summer heatwave on the wane, Enmore Park Seniors welcomed the seniors from Honiton for a match with just six groups, and Enmore scraped home as victors by four matches to two.

The outstanding result of the match was a win by 5 & 4 from Peter Sherry with Chris Willsteed, while Tim Smith with Chris Topps (4 & 2), Ben Gliddon with Tony Pomeroy (3 & 1), and Peter Robinson with Steve Lukins (2 & 1) completed the scoring.

Enmore Seniors’ past travels to Long Sutton have usually ended in the home team’s favour, and yet another reverse seemed on the cards when only a half point was gained after four pairs were in the clubhouse.

However, the final four pairings all came good, so Enmore prevailed by the narrowest of margins – 4½ points to 3½.

Enmore’s winners were Doug Read with Ray Lukeski, and Peter Scott with Chris Willsteed (both 2 & 1), while Tim Smith with Peter Farnell, and Martin Weston with Ben Gliddon, both won 1 up.

The important half point was secured by captain of the day, Steve Lukins, with John Newell.

Seniors captain Graham Pain was away competing on the East Devon course, where he sustained an injury requiring A&E treatment at Exeter; Enmore hope he will not be off the fairways for too long.

Seven-year-old Bertie Billson won the inaugural Academy Cup at Enmore Park’s Junior Open Classic on August 6.

Played over nine holes, he won the event for those juniors playing off 37-54 handicap, while Matthew Lee (playing off 40 handicap) was runner-up.

As well as scooping the main prize, Bertie also won the prize for nearest the pin on the second hole and the longest drive on the ninth.
