ENMORE golfers took their revenge against Worlebury with a 4-1 win on Thursday afternoon in an Avalon Seniors League game brought forward to ensure the match would be finished in time for the players to watch England’s World Cup game.

The home points came from Mike Rossiter and Martyn Westbury, Martyn Clapp and Neil Whisler, Keith Miller and Paul Martin and Phil Hodges and Phil Taylor.

The visitors’ captain, Steve Taylor, and partner John Rataiczak, earned Worlebury’s only points.

On a sweltering summer’s day, Enmore Park Seniors were hosts to their counterparts from Long Sutton.

It was stand-in captain Steve Lukins’ last game in charge before captain Graham Pain returned from his European ‘tour’.

As always, the match was keenly-contested with Enmore coming home 5-3.

Enmore’s outright winners were Ray Lukeski with Steve James (5&3), Jim McGuckin with Colin Bradley (3&2) and Keith Norcutt with Jim Smith (3&1).

The four halved matches involved Martin Watson with Ken Hunt, David Brown with Steve Lukins, Dave Comley and Tony Hughes and Ray Hancock with Chris Topps.

On the day England wobbled slightly against Belgium, Enmore Park Seniors welcomed back captain Graham Pain from his Eurozone travels and proceeded to play with style at the Tiverton course.

With fast, firm fairways and quick but pure greens, all that was required was straight shots to avoid the tree-lined course.

The fact Enmore came in winners by 5½-1½ matches told its own story.

Enmore’s points were won by David Pascoe with Mike Sullivan (6&5), Graham Pain with Doug Read, Keith Calvert with Keith Norcutt and Peter Farnell with Mike Perry (all by 2&1), Peter Scott with Mike Taylor (1up) while Peter Sherry with Jim Smith gained the important half.

The Ladies at Enmore took part in the annual Dawn Patrol, a Greensome format competition played over 18 holes with a 7.30am shotgun start.

The day was much enjoyed by the ladies, with fun and laughter to the fore.

The winners of the event were Diane Webster and Wendy White with 41 points, one ahead of second placed Deborah Dingle and Fiona Ryan with 40, while third place went to Betty Edney and Lorraine Taylor with 35.

Last Wednesday, 19 past lady captains met to play for the Brydon Cup.

The course was dry, allowing the ball to run much further than usual.

This caused problems for some, but three ladies really enjoyed the conditions, each returning under-par scores.

The winner was Sheila Bowden with 45 points, second Linda Anniss with 38, and third Janet Hambly with 37.

The following day EPGC Ladies played a match at Worlebury, where the highlight of the match, despite being defeated, was a hole-in-one for Di Webster.

Last Sunday, the EPGC Juniors held their Annual Championships over 36 holes, at the end of which it was Jacob Gamble (a 4 handicapper) who was the overall winner with a great total of 142 for the two two rounds, while nett winner was Will Andrews (31 handicap) with a score of 169.

Bridgwater Mercury:

CHANGING HANDS: Simon Rendell is taking over from Steve Varcoe.

SIMON Rendell has been appointed the new general manager at Enmore Park, following the retirement of his father-in-law Steve Varcoe.

Varcoe joined Enmore as a member in 1994 and was club captain in 2004 before being appointed as general manager in 2007.

In recognition of his time and commitment to the club, he was presented with a decanter and whisky glasses engraved with the Enmore Park GC logo.

He said: “I am sad to be retiring from a job that I have enjoyed doing very much, and will miss my daily involvement with everyone at Enmore.

“However, I feel Simon is the ideal person to take over the role.

“He has worked here for the past five years, and knows the club and its members very well.”

The new general manager became a lecturer at Bridgwater College in 2003.

He was appointed assistant manager at Enmore Park in 2013, and has already moved the club forward by introducing computer programmes and technologies.

He has also enhanced the club’s engagement with local schools and is studying for the GCMA Diploma.

Rendell said: “I am thrilled to have been appointed as general manager.

“Since I have been involved here I’ve been impressed by the success of the club in the community, and the recognition Enmore has both regionally and nationally.”
