Firebrands B 4, Bridgwater 2

A DEPLETED Bridgwater team travelled to Bristol to play Firebrands – a team they defeated easily earlier in the season.

Unfortunately things did not go so well this time around, with Firebrands taking the lead early on.

The visitors pulled one back through a Will Pope strike, but two further goals from the home side meant they went in at half time 3-1 up.

Bridgwater came out for the restart looking like a different team, pulling a goal back from a short corner as Duncan Morrish scored his first goal for the first XI.

But then a mix-up in the away defence enabled Firebrands to go two ahead once more.

The rest of the match was an even affair with no further goals, as

Bridgwater missed their influential captain Tom Lott through injury.

This coming Saturday sees Bridgwater, sixth in the table, host third-placed Mid Somerset (2.15pm).

THE 2nd XI welcomed Shepton Mallet to Bridgwater on a cold and wet day, and the game was well balanced with both teams creating chances.

It was Shepton who made the breakthrough with a goal on the counter-attack, and they made it 2-0 before half time.

The hosts knew they had their work cut out to get a result, and made some positional changes.

Eventually a well-worked move from a long corner saw the ball played into Simon Burland, who hit a reverse shot into the bottom corner.

But sadly for the hosts, the comeback was over almost as soon as it had begun, as a defensive error presented the away side with a third.

There was still time for one more goal, and Ted Kelly ran past several players to get into the D and play a brilliant ball to Aaron Turner for a tap-in.

Bridgwater now have to pick their heads up for next week and look to end the season on the right track.

They travel to North Somerset A, who are one place above them, this Saturday (2.30pm).

IN the last chance saloon for survival, Bridgwater 3rds forced a win to give themselves a chance to beat relegation.

The visitors scored twice in the first half, with goals from Marcus Blyth and Edward Hayden-Briffett, both from moved short corners.

Goalkeeper Rauch made several important saves and the defence some very good tackles to remain 2-0 up at half time.

The second half saw Firebrands score fairly quickly, but inside the last 20 minutes Bridgwater were awarded another short corner and this time Danny Rogers lofted a sweep into the net.

The hosts then made it 3-2, only for Sam Uminski to go on a mazy 40-metre run as his co-forwards Phil Morrish and Jack Dillon pulled the defence apart, and basically walked the ball into the net.

And it was 5-2 when Morrish’s direct shot from a short corner cannoned off both pads of the keeper to sneak over the line.

Firebrands pulled another one back, but Bridgwater saw the game out.

Now one point shy of safety, Bridgwater host bottom side Bristol University D on Saturday (12.15pm).

Bridgwater C 8, Yeovil & Sherborne B 2

BRIDGWATER captain Kev Hicks, returning from two weeks out injured, changed to an attacking formation with only two central defenders at the back.

The intention was to swamp Yeovil right from the start, and this worked well, with the hosts dominating the first half to take a 3-0 lead.

With strong midfield performances from Mike Eele, Tyler Fagan and Paul Blackmore, the home side scored a fourth goal early on, only for Yeovil to throw everything forward and pull two goals back.

But Bridgwater showed a lot of character and turned the game around again, shutting up shop at the back and scoring a further four times before the final whistle.

Steve Wilson claimed a hat-trick and strike partner Steve Turvey another goal, with Tyler Coleman and Eele (2) also getting on the scoresheet.

Bridgwater now find themselves fourth in the table, with a game at ECV Hornets B on Saturday (3.30pm), where a win would take them into third place.
