Hornets 2nd XV 38, Bridgwater & Albion 2nd XV 31

BRIDGWATER & Albion II suffered their first away defeat of the season, going down at league leaders Hornets.

The game started with a 20 minute stalemate – Bridgwater were far superior in the lineout, while Hornets had the upper hand in the scrum.

Both sets of backs produced dangerous plays and made a number of line breaks but it was Hornets who managed to seize upon one of these chances and convert pressure to points.

Hornets scored their second try of the day after winning a penalty in the red zone.

The quick tap saw the ball looped over the top to the wing where the ball was snuck over the line in the corner.

On the stroke of half time Bridgwater were finally awarded a well-deserved try of their own.

Their line-out dominance allowed them to set up a strong driving maul.

Once the maul had stopped the backs were released who crashed up towards the posts.

The ball was recycled to the backs and John Hill (Snr) came into the line and forced his way over for Albion’s first try of the game.

The second half saw an increase in tempo with the two teams trading tries.

Bridgwater were unable to take the momentum into the beginning of the second half and Hornet’s started to get the scoreboard ticking over again.

A try scored out wide saw the conversion hit the post meaning Hornets regained their 12-point lead 17-5.

Bridgwater utilised their rampaging lineout and set up another driving maul - the ball traded hands several times in the powerful drive with George Sluman being the benefactor of the packs efforts.

Hornets hit back with their fourth try of the afternoon, guaranteeing themselves a bonus point for the days efforts.

It was Bridgwater’s turn to score next and Oscar Tregenna was more than happy to perform his duties.

Hornets finished the job they had started and scored with an overlap, before Hill (Snr) then converted his own effort to take the score to 34- 24.

Hornets’ final score of the game came almost straight from kick-off but Bridgwater scored their final try of the game much like they scored their first, in the last play of the half, through Dan Lang.

l Albion II take on local rivals North Petherton II next weekend at College Way.
