STUDENTS from a secondary school in Bridgwater have picked up some notable silverware in both swimming and trampolining as of late.

A team of students from the school competed in Bridgwater’s first swimming gala in almost 25 years and were declared the overall winners of the competition.

The Girls’ Team, and the Year 9s and Over Team, managed to secure the first position.

Congratulations to the following students who make up the Haygrove Swimming Team: Malakai, Will, Phoebe, Archie, Noah, Emily, Heath, Aiden, Luca, Harrison, Ella, Ava, Isabel, Freya, Millie, Molly, Matilda and David.

Haygrove’s trampolining squad celebrated similar success at the Southern Zonal Trampoline Championships, with an exceptional performance seeing them through to the national competition.

Year 9 student Jamie came in first place against strong opposition in the 7-9 Elite boys and will now progress to the National Finals.

The 7-9 Elite Girls team, Siyaana, Emily, Mia and Izzy, were crowned champions, with Siayaana coming first, and Emily coming third - both girls will now proceed as individuals to the National Finals in March, with Mia and Izzy joining them for the team competition.

The Year 9-10 Novice Girls team, (Maya, Evie, Jess and Jess) came in second place, with Maya qualifying as an individual, as well as the team as a whole progressing to the National Finals.

The 7-9 Intermediate team also performed very well finishing just outside of the medals in a very strong category. Whilst they will not progress to the nationals, they 'displayed excellent promise for the future'.

Den Gibbs, Trampolining Coach at Haygrove School, said: “Thank you to Tim Bennett for driving the minibus incredibly well in very adverse weather conditions.

"Thanks also to our former student Lulu, parents Claire and Ali, and students Siyaana, Emily and Maya for working as officials. We would not be able to compete without your help.”

James Gray, Head of PE at Haygrove School, added: “What a fantastic opportunity for our students and a brilliant result!

"Thank you so much to 1610 Trinity Sports and Leisure and Burnham-on-Sea Swimming Club for all their time organising a great event for these students."

Aaron Reid, Headteacher at Haygrove School, said: “This was a fantastic success for our Haygrove swimming team and trampolining team, and they should be really proud of the way they all performed.

"I know these students dedicate a lot of time to practice before and after school and competitions like this are fantastic to showcase their hard work. Well done everyone.”
