A LARGE fire broke out in a field near Westonzoyland on Tuesday evening (May 15).
Firefighters put out the blaze at the old airfield, which broke out shortly after 8pm.
It is not yet clear what started the fire, which was visible for miles around.
Eyewitness Shirley Routley, of Toneborough, told the Mercury: "A local fire tender was in attendance although they arrived very quietly.
"It was soon apparent the fire was a large pile of tyres burning. The smoke could be see pluming into the sky for miles.
"Surprisingly there was no smell."
