ABIGAIL Carpenter was judged Highly Commended for her efforts in giving ‘a voice to other young carers in Somerset, who may otherwise not have been heard’ at the Pride of Somerset Youth Awards.
The 16-year-old, who was a youth awards winner in 2010, not only helps to care for her sister – who has complex mental health and physical disabilities – she also cares for other carers in and around Bridgwater.
And she’s found time to campaign against planned cuts to Young Carers’ services. She spoke up for her fellow carers at county council meetings, and has also spent a considerable amount of time raising the issues with journalists in the hope of getting her message to a wider audience.
Her efforts helped to persuade the authority to hold back on cuts for a year.
