SEDGEMOOR Magistrates’ Court in Bridgwater WILL close, it has just been announced, with all its workload moving to Taunton.
The Government today revealed that only ten magistrates’ courts nationwide have been spared, from the 103 which were earmarked for closure under Ministry of Justice cost-cutting plans.
The MoJ says the closures will save taxpayers in England and Wales £41.5million, plus a possible £38.5million from the sale of assets, of which £22 million will be spent on upgrading the courts now taking on extra workload.
They include Taunton Deane Magistrates’ Court, in St John's Road, Taunton.
Bridgwater MP Ian Liddell-Grainger described the decision to close the court in Northgate, Bridgwater, as “an absolute disgrace.” He said: “Taunton’s court cannot cope with its workload as it is.”
