BURNHAM’S MP Tessa Munt revealed Chancellor George Osborne told her the nation’s spending levels have gone back by just two years.

The LibDem managed a quick word with Mr Osborne after his Spending Review announcements and he said the cuts mean the country will spend the same amount as it did in 2008.

Ms Munt said: “I originally thought we would go back to our spending levels in 2004 so I have to say I don’t think we are in as bad a position as we thought we would be.

“We are going to sort out this financial mess over the next four years, and we know we can’t keep increasing our debt.

“These cuts will affect a lot of people but I am pleased the we have persuaded the Chancellor the LibDem priorities for tax, a better chance at education, and for green jobs should not be affected.

“Of course these changes will have an impact on a lot of people in our area but I feel we are a bit more resilient in Somerset because we don’t rely as much on state jobs as other places.”
