THE campaign to get BBC Radio 1's Beccy Huxtable to switch on Bridgwater's Christmas lights seems to have been won.

More than 2,000 people have taken part in an on-line Mercury poll, with more than 90% saying they want the popular Scott Mills Show producer, and former Bridgwater College student, to switch on our festive lights on November 24.

Steve Leahy, chairman of Bridgwater Chamber of Trade, which is organising the switch-on, said technicalities involving another radio station had been ironed out and the popular Scott Mills Show producer would be coming to town.

Radio 1 could not confirm the news as we went to press yesterday (Monday).

Mr Leahy said: “There are small logistical matters to sort out and there will be further meetings to finalise a few bits and pieces.

“The event we are putting on is an attempt to drive shoppers back into Bridgwater and the switch-on is seen as a really good venture to show that we can do this.

“The amount of hits the Mercury website has had shows the support and popularity for Beccy and Scott Mills.

“It is really good news and it will make the event a success for everyone and the local shops and traders.”

Beccy's bid to switch on the lights received celebrity backing on Thursday after former Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger pledged her support.

She told The Scott Mills Show: “I am totally behind Beccy and I want her to turn on the lights in Bridgwater.”
