PEOPLE poured into St Francis Church in Bridgwater to engage in a spot of reminiscing during a special weekend marking its 50th anniversary.

The event at the church on Saturday and Sunday last week featured displays of photographs, newspaper articles and personal memorabilia.

There was a fantastic display of artwork created by local schoolchildren and based on the life of St Francis, plus a full-size sculpture of St Francis completed by the church’s Sunday school.

Visitors were able to see a video diary from 1995 and 1996, which featured many church members who have since died, and the last sermon of Rev Sally Lacey, who is now a priest at Berrow Church.

Among the visitors was The Rev Preb Bill Scott, the first curate at St Francis, between 1973 and 1977, who is now chaplin to the Queen and sub dean of Her Majesty’s Chapels Royals.

He shared memories of life under the first vicar at St Francis, the Rev Ernest Gill, and attended a special service where six couples previously married at St Francis renewed their vows.

The Rt Revd Peter Price, Bishop of Bath and Wells, then led a packed communion service on the Sunday, which was followed by lunch for almost 100 parishioners.
