AN intruder at a farm near Bridgwater got up to his neck in trouble - after leaping into a slurry pit.

The man had to be rescued by four fire crews after the incident at Folletts Farm in Dunwear on Sunday night.

Christine Barnett, who lives on the farm, said she heard the sound of a tractor engine starting and sent her partner's son to investigate.

Christine said he then disturbed the intruder, who then leapt into the pit.

It took fire crews using specialist equipment almost an hour to release him.

Christine told the Mercury: “I actually felt quite sorry for him - he was frightened to death.

“While we were waiting for the fire brigade he was telling me how sorry he was and how he would never do it again.

“It must have been scary for him.

“He really was up to his neck in it.”

A police spokesman told the Mercury that a man in his 20s from Bridgwater had been arrested on suspicion of attempted theft of a motor vehicle, and released on bail.
