AN East Bridgwater Community School pupil has completed a challenging cycle ride to raise money for two national charities.

15-year old Karl Hitchcock, accompanied by his brother Marcus, cycled a mammoth 105 miles from Bridgwater to Plymouth for the pet charity PDSA and Children in Need.

Not allowing punctures and the wet weather to dampen their spirits, it took the pair 13 hours over two days to reach their final destination in Plymouth.

They stayed overnight in Exeter before setting off on the final leg of their journey and enjoyed the support they received from motorists along the route.

Karl, who suffers from asthma, said: “I am very pleased I've completed the route. I thought I would reach Taunton and want to go back home but I got there.

“A radio station in Devon was informing motorists about our challenge and it was nice to hear cars beeping us with support along the way. Some cars even stopped to give us money.

“The toughest part of the route was the ascent up Telegraph Hill in Devon, I thought it would never end. A lot of people have congratulated me for completing it and the school has been very pleased too.

“I would like to thank everyone for their support, including mum and dad for all their help, and Ali Lazenby for her continuous help on the way to ensure our safety.”
