STAFF at Blush Hair & Beauty are 'thrilled' to have been crowned the Bridgwater Mercury's Hairdresser of the Year 2024 following a public vote.

The salon, based in Woolavington, offers a huge variety of services from haircuts, extensions, and colouring, to lashes, nails, and even Botox, fillers, and semi-permanent makeup.

The tight-knit team at Blush was recruited by directors Kate Nicholson and Marie Haddon, who first opened the business in 2020.Bridgwater Mercury: A look inside the salon.A look inside the salon. (Image: Jamie Grover, Newsquest)

Both friends before starting their business, Kate and Marie worked tirelessly to renovate and reform the former bakery premises in time for Blush's grand opening.

Adversity struck soon after the salon first opened however, as the country was plunged into lockdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic just ten weeks later.

Against all odds, Blush survived the pandemic, largely due to its extremely loyal client base from Woolavington and further afield, according to Kate and Marie.Bridgwater Mercury: Kate Nicholson (left) and Marie Haddon (right), directors of Blush Hair & Beauty.Kate Nicholson (left) and Marie Haddon (right), directors of Blush Hair & Beauty. "We've got a good customer base," Marie said.

"We get a lot of people from town, even Minehead - all over really," Kate added.

The pair worked until midnight on several occasions after lockdown was lifted to get the business back on its feet, and from there onwards, things have skyrocketed.

Now a team of nine people, Blush even offer treatments such as reiki, aromatherapy, and massages.Bridgwater Mercury: Blush offers a huge array of services and treatments.Blush offers a huge array of services and treatments. (Image: Jamie Grover, Newsquest)

The staff pride themselves on catering to people of all ages and backgrounds, from all walks of life, treating each service like a 'therapy session'.

"We want people to leave feeling relaxed, happy, and like they want to come back," Kate said.

"We treat everyone the same, new or old - we always greet them and offer them a drink."

Marie added: "We have people here for hours! We make them lots of cups of tea."Bridgwater Mercury: The lounge/waiting area at Blush. The lounge/waiting area at Blush. (Image: Jamie Grover, Newsquest)

Speaking on their success since opening which has seen them crowned the Bridgwater Mercury Hairdresser of the Year 2024, Kate said: "We didn't expect it at all - we're chuffed!"

Marie added: "We were thrilled!"

In addition to this, the dog-friendly salon which can also tailor for those with special needs has been named as a finalist for two categories at the English Hair and Beauty Awards.

Always looking to expand their services, Marie and Kate want someone 'professional and fun who loves the industry' to join the team at Blush.

The ideal candidate should have experience in hair and/or beauty, with their own clientele.

"Come and see us and have a chat, and a cup of tea," Kate said.
