CHILDREN and staff at a primary school near Bridgwater were dressed in pyjamas as they celebrated World Book Day.

Mrs Rood, Headteacher at Spaxton C of E Primary said: "We have all come to school in our pyjamas today ready to enjoy lots of books and stories.

"We also judged the entries from our Paper Plate Competition run by our Reading Ambassadors.

"Children decorated their paper plate with a book character or their favourite scene from a book - there were so many fantastic creative entries showing a real love for books at Spaxton."

World Book Day's mission is to foster a love for reading and promote every child's chance to own a book, improving their future opportunities.

It was created by UNESCO in April 1995 and is celebrated in over 100 countries worldwide.

The first celebration in the UK and Ireland took place in 1997.
