A DISUSED farm building near Bridgwater could be converted into homes under new plans submitted to Somerset Council.

Mr J Milverton has applied to convert an 'obsolete' barn on Lower Clavelshay Farm in North Petherton into two new dwellings.

In a planning statement submitted by Aspire Planning Solutions Ltd on behalf of Mr Milverton, it is stated there is 'minimal alteration' planned to change the use of the building.

The proposed dwellings would be separated by a boundary between the short side of the barn to enable independent use of each dwelling, with them being arranged in opposite direction to the other.

Access will remain via Clavelshay Road and the existing farm track which currently serves existing dwellings on the land, as well as the farm and restaurant.

The west dwelling would feature two bedrooms and benefit from a living area which is planned to face a garden area.

The planned east dwelling would be 'slightly larger', featuring three bedrooms, and 'a small addition; to the south elevation to create a stepped access to the lounge area.

In the planning statement, Aspire Planning Solutions Ltd explained the applicant's rationale for the buildings.

"The rationale behind converting these buildings is to make optimum viable use of buildings that have become obsolete for modern farming practices," they wrote.

"The current arrangement does not make best use of these historic and characterful structure.

"The long-term future and retention of these buildings will be secured through the conversion to two dwellings."
