PART of a former RAF airfield near Bridgwater could be repurposed to become a new caravan site.

Neil Chapman of the Caravan and Motorhome Club has applied to create a touring caravan site with 20 pitches, a caravan storage compound, and new reception and staff accommodation buildings, on land previously home to RAF Westonzoyland - now known as Spring Way Farm.

It is proposed that a new tarmac access road to the south of the site would be built to provide holidaymakers with a route into the park.

The pitches are planned to be constructed using permeable, locally-sourced loose stone to reduce risk of flooding, whilst also enabling the park to be suitable during all weather conditions.

The proposed new park would serve members of the Caravan and Motorhome Club, many of whom are elderly and prefer all-weather parks, according to the applicant.

An existing barn already on the site would be utilised to provide a reception, office space, and toilet facilities.

If plans are approved, prospective staff would live on the site for up to ten months inside a designated static caravan.

In addition to this, the proposed site would include a caravan storage compound with 441 bays, and the potential for a further 58 to the south of the site.

A caravan washdown unit for club members to clean their caravans whilst in storage is also amongst the plans.

Finally, the site would require a new internal road system to allow club members to access both the touring pitches and storage compound.

Comments are welcomed until Tuesday, 20 February, and approval could be given from the next day.
