Major plans to transform golf course near Bridgwater

The planned work will take place at Enmore Park Golf Club, and includes the formation of perimeter flood defences around the existing practice ground, new maintenance vehicle access, infilling of a large gully, and the creation of additional car park.

According to the design and access statement submitted by the club: "The works will provide improvement to parts of the golf course and practice ground to ensure that the facilities can be maintained and used safely at all times by staff and club members."

The club hopes to infill a 3,922 square metre gully, which spans across the course from hole one, to hole 18, in order to enable maintenance to be carried out in a safe manner.

Currently, the depth and slope of the gully means it cannot be maintained, and poses a safety risk to golfers searching for lost balls.

If the plans are approved, the gully will be finished with wild flower meadow, woodland plants, log piles, and native trees in line with the Somerset Council's Pollinator Action Plan and Biodiversity Strategy.

There are also plans to form a bund (a constructed retaining wall, embankment or dyke designed to protect against flooding) around the existing practice grounds.

The ground is often closed due to flooding, but the proposed bunding is designed to channel surface water away from the practice area and into the Durleigh Brook.

The application reads: "As part of these works a turning cycle/checking area for the lorries will be created and on completion of the works this turning area will be turned into additional car parking spaces with the potential for four number charging points.

The additional 34 new car parking spaces will be formed of heavy-duty commercial traffic grass reinforcement grids, covering an area larger than a square kilometre (1,043m2).

Comments are welcomed until January 30 2024, and planning permission could be granted as early as January 31.
