THE site of a 19th century hotel in Sedgemoor could be replaced as revised plans have been submitted to Somerset Council.

Longleat Estates Ltd have again applied to  build on the vacant Cox's Mill Hotel site in Cheddar, after initial plans approved in 2020 fell through.

The revised plans submitted this week outline blueprints for a new public space and car park on the land housing the hotel.

The applicants hope to extend the existing car park, and install a new electric vehicle charging point, as well as bike parking rack opposite the entrance to Cox's Cave.

Plans also detail new landscaping to the area, and the removal of the existing bridge which sits below the Cheddar Waterfall.

Longleat Estates Ltd also hope to build a new viewing platform so that visitors can enjoy the waterfall in all its glory.

Simon Townsend, Cheddar Gorge and Caves' operations manager, told a public meeting in 2019 the premises was "an eyesore" and was becoming unsafe.

"We don't want it to become so unsafe it is causing a hazard to anyone and we want to be able to take it down in a way which is easier for the community," he said.

"We hope the changes will enhance the lower gorge, the views and the area around Cox's Cave and the Queen's Row shops and make it a much nicer space for our visitors and local people."

Comments are welcomed until December 7, although approval could be given as early as December 8 2023.
