A CHILD is due to appear in court after assaulting adults at a Bridgwater school last week.

Robert Blake School was forced to implement its "lockdown" procedure on Wednesday, September 6, due to an incident reported to police at 12:42pm.

In an email to parents seen by the Bridgwater Mercury, Robert Blake's head teacher, Miss Loveridge, said the school entered "lockdown" after someone "entered the school site who should not have done".

The email also states that, despite locking the doors, the suspect managed to enter the school but left the site after the police were called.

A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police said: "A child aged 13 is due before Taunton Youth Court on Wednesday, October 4 charged with five counts of assault following an incident in Bridgwater on Wednesday, September 6.

"Adults were assaulted during the incident which was reported to police at 12.42pm.

"A child was located and arrested overnight Wednesday 6 to Thursday, September 7 and is on conditional bail pending their court appearance."

No weapon was used in the incident and no children were injured.

Robert Blake School and Somerset Council have since released a joint statement which reads: "Safety at our school is paramount and we would like to reassure parents that our staff reacted quickly to ensure this issue was dealt with promptly and with no harm to any students.

"As there is an ongoing police investigation we will not be commenting further and we politely ask people to avoid speculation.

"Our focus remains on providing any support needed for our children, staff and the wider school community. "
