BRIDGWATER'S Christmas lights were switched on yesterday evening after a packed day of activities in the town centre.

Councillor Liz Leavy, the town's mayor, turned on the stunning illuminations at the earlier time of 5pm (November 26) because of forecast high winds and rain.

Planned squibbing and fireworks displays were cancelled by the town council a day before the Shopping & Snowflakes spectacular due to public safety concerns.

Despite the adverse weather conditions, people turned out in numbers to watch the lights be switched on and celebrate the start of the festive season.

Earlier in the day, there were more than 40 stalls in High Street and the town centre, giving shoppers plenty of choice for presents and food and drink.

Families also made the most of fairground rides and a Punch and Judy show before Father Christmas popped into Bridgwater in the afternoon.

Sedgemoor District Council offered free parking in its Bridgwater and Burnham-on-Sea car parks to benefit visitors who came for the towns' lights switch-ons.

The district council will also offer free parking on December 3, 10, 17 and 24.
