More than 200 new homes could soon be built near a Somerset primary school.

Hallam Land Management and Persimmon Homes Severn Valley have outline planning permission to deliver 2,000 homes between the A39 Bath Road and the Bristol to Exeter railway line in Bridgwater.

Bloor Homes South West has put forward revised plans to deliver 237 new homes on the eastern side of King’s Drive, opposite Willowdown Primary School.

Sedgemoor District Council is expected to make a decision on the proposals early in the new year.

The site lies opposite the school (which opened in 2014), sandwiched between Old Bath Road to the east, existing development to the north and the Cellophane Ponds to the south.

Access will be provided onto King’s Drive, with a junction already being in place and existing cycling links to the wider Bridgwater area being extended.

Of the 237 homes which are proposed for the site,  53 will be affordable – the equivalent of 22 per cent, far below the council’s 30 per cent target for any new development of ten homes or more.

A spokesman for Barton Willmore (representing the Leicestershire-based developer) said: “The proposals will help deliver a place that will have its own distinct character while blending in sympathetically with its surroundings.

“The design and layout have been carefully considered to create a place reflective of the aspirations set out in the wider vision for the wider North East Bridgwater development.

“The creation of safe and accessible pedestrian routes through the development that connect with the wider pedestrian movement network.”

The majority of the North East Bridgwater development has already been delivered, with the council recently granting approval for several of the remaining parcels of land.

Approval was granted in April for 77 homes on the site of the Sydenham Barn wedding venue, with a decision expected shortly on a further 98 homes south of the Willow Man sculpture.

A further 80 low-cost homes are being delivered on the eastern side of King’s Road, following a £15M investment by Vistry Partnerships.

Most recently, the council granted permission for 53 homes on King’s Road, a stone’s throw from the Morrisons distribution centre.

The council is expected to make a decision on the Bloor Homes proposals in early-2023.
