BRIDGWATER'S Guy Fawkes Carnival celebrations started in style last night with a lantern parade and grand fireworks display.

The curtain-raising fireworks began at 7.30pm in St Matthew's Field, with the build-up starting from 3.30pm.

Local school children got involved with the lantern parade, which began at 7pm from the Bridgwater YMCA.

Around 100 children took part from Cannington Primary School, Northgate Primary School, Otterhampton Primary School, St Mary’s Primary School, Somerset Bridge Primary School and Willowdown Primary School.

The spectacle was sponsored by Bridgwater Town Council and supported by Sedgemoor District Council for the 15th year.

The lantern parade and fireworks precede the Bridgwater Carnival procession and squibbing display, which return today after 1,099 days.

A spokesperson for Bridgwater Guy Fawkes Carnival said: “A big thank you to everyone who attended our grand fireworks display tonight and who supported our official charity car park & collection!

“See you all tomorrow for the big day - we can't wait, it's been too long...”
