THE 2022 Bridgwater Guy Fawkes Carnival celebrations will start with a bang at a ‘Grand Firework Display’ on Friday, November 4.

Sponsored by Bridgwater Town Council and supported by Sedgemoor District Council for the fifteenth successive year (excluding the Covid years), the traditional carnival curtain raiser event will take place at St Matthew’s Field.

The glittering fireworks display, which starts at 7.30pm, has proved popular in the past with spectators and has been well supported by people in and around the Sedgemoor area.

The build-up to the fireworks display will start at 3.30pm, as there will be other attractions at St Matthew’s Field to entertain the family, including a handful of fairground rides, kindly provided by the world-famous Chipperfield family.

Local school children will also be getting in on the fun with a special lantern parade which starts at 7pm from the Bridgwater YMCA.

Approximately 100 children are expected to take part from Cannington Primary School, Northgate Primary School, Otterhampton Primary School, St Mary’s Primary School, Somerset Bridge Primary School, and Willowdown Primary School.

Mike Crocker, president for Bridgwater Guy Fawkes Carnival, said: “It is terrific news that we are once again able to hold a grand fireworks display on carnival night eve, and it will get the town in the mood for what is to come the following night.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank Bridgwater Town Council and Sedgemoor District Council for their continued generosity. If it wasn’t for the help we receive from local authorities, organisations, and companies, our carnival would not be as popular as it is.”

There will be a £5 charge for parking in St Matthew’s Field, with all proceeds raised going towards the Bridgwater Carnival charity.

Gates for parking will open at 6pm.

Official collectors will also be roaming the site so those attending on foot can also make a donation.

No unauthorised pedlars will be allowed into the field during the event.
