PLANS have been submitted to bring two dwellings to an “underused and dilapidated” agricultural site in Fordgate, near Bridgwater.

The proposal seeks to redevelop land adjacent to Chapel Road, which currently comprises two large units and three stores.

The redevelopment seeks to convert two of the units into houses with “similar-looking facades”.

A large unit on the south side of the site would be converted and have its roof extended to accommodate the first-floor living space.

Another large unit towards the north of the site would be demolished and reconstructed. Other smaller units would be demolished.

The planning application says: “This proposal is for the land adjacent to Chapel Road, which is an agricultural site currently comprising two large units and three stores.

”The site has been used in varying capacities over the years, including a storage area for the drainage board, storage of waste such as rubble, and storing horses for a short time.

”The initial intention of the barn was for intensive calf rearing for export, however it was never completed.”

It adds: ”Currently, the site is a visual eyesore due to the poor quality of the existing buildings and the lack of maintenance.

”Restoration of the existing units is possible; however, they are redundant and will serve little purpose.”

If the application is successful, the dwellings would have a “modern, agricultural appearance”.

The proposal says: ”A covered parking area has been introduced to the site in an effort to retain the character of the site, while also offering a more visually pleasing solution to parking.”

The applicant does not believe the two dwellings would cause any significant impact on the surrounding highway network.

Each dwelling would have a large garage, which could be converted into work spaces. Cycle parking would be included in the development.

“The intention is to design using high-quality materials to create homes that are both aesthetically pleasing, sustainable and respectful of their context,” says the application.

“This will be achieved by modernising the exterior of both barns whilst still respecting the agricultural history of the site by using modern standing seam cladding.”

The application will be considered a self-build. It will not remove any land used for agriculture or extend the urbanised area into the countryside.
