THE Arts Society Sedgemoor (TASS) will host a lecture on “the wonder of Art Nouveau glass” with art history lecturer Justine Hopkins later this week.

The lecture will take place at the 37 Club on the afternoon of Wednesday, October 5.

It will focus on the Art Nouveau glass, which was popular in the 1890s and 1900s until the outbreak of World War I.

The style was commonly seen in decorative objects, glasses, lamps, and stained glass windows, and was usually made by hand.

A TASS spokesperson said: “Tough, fragile and unpredictable; colourful or colourless; capable of flowing like metal or being carved like stone.

“To be shaped it must be heated and reheated to extreme temperatures; and as it cools it may shatter explosively.

“Glass is dangerous, difficult and glamorous; a combination which has fascinated craftsmen and artists, chemists and collectors throughout history.

“Our October lecture explores the wonder of Art Nouveau glass and its outstanding contribution to one of the most important movements of last century.

“The TASS talk by Justine Hopkins on October 5 will be held at the 37 Club (between Woolavington and Puriton) at 2.pm for a 2:15pm start, or come earlier to chat to other members in the bar.

“Visitors are always welcome, at a charge of £8 per lecture.”
