AN Italian-themed restaurant in Bridgwater is having to shut its doors as spiralling energy costs "do not make it viable" to keep it open.

The 16-seater restaurant, Kitchen Danilo, will serve its last customers on September 30.

Chef patron, Daniel Lay said he couldn't afford the energy bills after he was given a quote of £4,500 per month for electricity alone - and he currently pays just £650 for both gas and electricity.

"I just can’t afford to pay this. For electricity alone the cost would be around £4,500 per month, which is more than my rent and other bills combined.

"I currently pay around £650 but this seems to be increasing monthly, and very rapidly."

In an open message to his customers on Facebook, Mr Lay said: "On the same date as I opened, just twelve months ago, it is with great sadness that I am now announcing the closure of Kitchen Danilo.

"Spiralling energy costs, constant supplier increases and escalating food and beverage costs do not make it viable to keep my beloved 16-seater restaurant open."

The restaurant has been popular among Bridgwater locals and Mr Lay appreciated the support.

"My restaurant has been a place of beautiful people, award winning food, pure joy and happiness but unfortunately, it is also a businesses and sadly, it’s one that will not succeed right now.

"I’d like to thank each and every one of you that ever came through my door. I appreciate every single one of you and honestly, will never forget the support you gave my intimate little restaurant, the happy times you had whilst dining and the stories we shared over the pass.

The part of the restaurant, named Lounge Danilo, will remain open. It will serve brand new pinsas and sharing boards.

Daniel Lay said: "I will look to increase this menu, but for now I am understandably remaining cautious."

He added: "I am trying to save our team Adie, our waitress will remain with us, as will James and you’ll see them both down at the lounge. David, our cleaner and pot wash is also still with us."

Mr Lay finished with a message for the government: "I really hope the government act fast and help small businesses such as mine because honestly, it’s scary out here."
