A STAGED road traffic accident at the Bridgwater College left staff and students shocked as they made their way to the college on Monday (March 10).

The road collision was staged by the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service as part of a hard-hitting programme of activities to highlight road safety.

The fire service was working in partnership with the college's public and emergency services staff and the Brake Road Safety Charity.

Students participated in a number of activities, including a workshop titled Too Young To Die, which focused on people whose lives had been affected directly by road traffic accidents.

Choices and Consequences was a thought-provoking presentation focusing on the disastrous effect driving under the influence of drink and drugs can have on innocent people.

Section leader for sports and service at the college, Jason Gunningham, said: "This was a really hard-hitting and sometimes emotional project.

"It has had an impact on the way our students think about their responsibility when driving.

"Our thanks go to the Devon and Somerset fire and rescue service for their build-up and delivery of this event, which we have no doubt our young students will benefit from."
