CONCERNED residents living on a Bridgwater road have presented a petition asking for action to be taken against antisocial driving.

People living on Westonzoyland Road have presented their petition to councillor Diogo Rodrigues.

The petition has nearly 60 signatories asking for the addition of traffic calming measures and other road changes.

Their concerns are centred on a stretch of road outside St John & St Francis Primary School, which has a 20mph speed limit.

The residents' petition said: “We as residents along A372 Westonzoyland Road have safety concerns regarding the traffic on the road.

“The 20mph limit is not being adhered to by various forms of vehicle.

“We would like to see improvements such as traffic calming measures, extra signage on the road and along the 20mph section, and road surface improvements to reduce noise pollution.”

Diogo Rodrigues, a former Bridgwater mayor and a current district and county councillor, said: “Not long ago, a vehicle went into the fence along here which has added to the concern among residents, and this is not the first time.

“We clearly have an unsustainable situation here where many drivers are simply not adhering to the speed limit.

“This includes several aggregate vehicles, the number of which has rocketed in recent weeks.

“I recently had a meeting with one of those very aggregate companies who accepted that some drivers were not adhering to the speed and would take action to ensure that they do.

“We urgently need solutions and I hope that Somerset County Council and Avon & Somerset Police will work with me to provide those at pace.”
