A LARGE quantity of rubbish that had caught fire earlier today required two fire engines to put out.

Bridgwater Fire Station were alerted to plumes of black smoke in the area and initially sent one fire engine to the scene.

The rubbish measured 10 metres by 10 metres and was located on an area of waste ground in Middlezoy.

After seeing the fire, crews requested the attendance of a second fire engine due to the possibility of cylinders in the rubbish pile.

A spokesperson from Devon and Somerset Fire Service said: "Fire Control received calls reporting plumes of black smoke in Middlezoy near Bridgwater.  One fire engine from Bridgwater attended.

"Upon arrival, fire crews requested a fire involving a quantity of rubbish measuring 10 metres by 10 metres on an area of waste ground.

" Fire crews tackled the fire using 2 breathing apparatus wearers and 1 hose reel jet.  Fire crews requested the attendance of a 2nd fire engine from Bridgwater due to the possibility of cylinders in the rubbish pile."

"Fire crews removed one LPG cylinder from the rubbish fire, which was not involved in fire and used drag forks to extinguish the fire and dampen down hot spots."
