MECCA Bingo has confirmed it will close its Bridgwater hall permanently later this month after nearly 50 years in the town.

The Penel Orlieu bingo club will host its final games on Sunday, August 14.

Last month, the company announced the venue “will be closing” and thanked “every single one of our incredible customers for their loyalty and support for the last 48 years”.

Regular users of the bingo hall have been told there is still time to “pop in and see the team before we close” and advised to spend their vouchers.

A Mecca Bingo Bridgwater spokesperson said: “We can confirm that our official last day will be Sunday, August 14.

“It is still a very sad and difficult time, but the overwhelming support from you guys has been very special and we are super thankful.

“We still have some great offers going on before we close and, of course, we are working on plans for our last week.

“If you have any vouchers, then please aim to spend them before we close.”

Former Mecca Bingo employees and players have expressed their sadness about the hall's imminent closure under the Facebook post announcing the news.

One commented: “Lots of good memories here. One of the closest knit teams I’ve had the pleasure of managing. Loved my time at Bridgwater.

“Sad news, such a shame to see it close.”

Another said: “Very sad news. I have enjoyed bingo very much over the past years with my daughter and friends had some very good nights out will miss going.

“I also wish all the staff all the very best for the future and sorry it has come to this for you all.”

Several other Mecca Bingo halls are also due to close on August 14, including in Gloucester, Sittingbourne, Halifax and Devonport
