THE Sedgemoor Radio Controlled Flying Club (SRCFC) has played a part in setting a new world record for the number of model aircraft in the air at one time.

The club joined the BMFA (British Model Flying Association) challenge and 16 flyers attended the event at Westonzoyland on May 14 helping to reach a total of 3109 models in the air at one time, along with other BMFA affiliated clubs around the UK.

The previous record of 178 was reportedly set in the US in the 90s.

Christopher Betty, a member of the Sedgemoor Radio Controlled Flying Club, said the world record is “yet to be ratified” but the club is feeling “positive” about the outcome.

He also added: “The BMFA will take the next steps, it is a slow process but it is looking positive. It’s likely that we have set a new world record.”

Simon Vaitkevicius, BMFA Records Officer, said: “We are pleased to report after checking the submitted results from each of the clubs participating that we had a total of 3109 models in the air at 12 noon and that 263 BMFA affiliated clubs took part.

“We have therefore achieved a new BMFA National absolute record. We will be submitting a dossier to the FAI for the issue of the Diploma to acknowledge the achievement and when successfully issued, apply for a World Record.”

The attempt was one of a number of events celebrating the BMFA/SMAE Centenary.

Mr Betty previously said: “The BMFA is celebrating its centenary and thought it was a good idea to set a record in the centenary year.

He also added that members who flew planes, helicopters, and drones were “waiting with bated breath”.

More updates will be available in July.
