LABOUR gained two seats from the Conservatives in last week's Bridgwater Town Council election as voters went to the polls to elect their local government representatives.

Town and parish council elections were held across Sedgemoor on Thursday, May 5 alongside the election that decided the members of the new Somerset unitary authority.

The Liberal Democrats took overall control of the new Somerset Council by securing 61 seats in the local elections – five more than were required for a majority.

Contested town and parish council elections were held in Bridgwater, Bawdrip, Cannington, Othery, and Weare.

Here are the results of the contested seats and elections.

In some places, no elections were held due to there being an insufficient number of candidates.

Bridgwater Town Council election results

LABOUR won 13 of Bridgwater Town Council's 16 seats in last week's election.

The Conservatives won three seats: Two in Wyndham and one in Dunwear South.

The council was previously made up of 11 Labour councillors and five Conservative councillors.

Labour took both seats from the Conservatives in Fairfax East.

The list of elected Labour representatives includes Kathy Pearce, Brian Smedley and Leigh Redman, who were also elected to the new Somerset Council.

A Somerset Labour spokesperson described the election results as “a great victory for Bridgwater at exactly the right time”.
