LANGPORT has been voted the best place to live in Somerset in a recent survey.

With people relocating out of London in search of a more fulfilling life balance, lifestyle site Muddy Stilettos and Strutt & Parker asked a million people to choose the best place to live outside the capital.

And the Top 200 Best Places to Live guide across 26 counties saw Langport top the bill of eight potential candidates in Somerset as the acclaimed ‘urban guide to the countryside’ gave its readers the power of the ‘vote’ to tell them how strongly they felt about where they are living.

Back in the (medieval) day, boats unloaded their wares on the wharf; later goods (and passengers) arrived by train but Dr Beeching put an end to that with savage railway cuts in the 60s.

Today, the little town on the edge of the Somerset Levels has a clutch of thriving, laid back indies and a spirit to match – and there’s talk of reinstating the railway station on the fast GWR London Paddington line.

The top eight most popular towns and villages in Somerset in the survey were:

1 Langport;

2 Frome;

3 Wells;

4 Clevedon;

5 Castle Cary;

6 Ilminster;

7 Bruton;

8 Bear Flat, Bath.
