THREE Somerset drivers have been fined for exceeding a 30mph speed limit on the same stretch of the A372 near Bridgwater on the same day.

The three men were caught speeding on the A372 (Westonzoyland Road) near the M5 on June 1, 2021.

They were handed fines and penalty points by Bath Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, February 16.

Two of the men pleaded guilty, while one was proved guilty under the single justice procedure. 

Under the single justice procedure, people who are charged with minor criminal offences can have their case decided by a magistrate without going to court.

Francis Michael Lott, of Alderney Road, Bridgwater, pleaded guilty under the single justice procedure after he was caught driving at 51mph.

Lott, 76, was fined £120 and ordered to pay a £34 surcharge to fund victim services and court costs of £90, giving him a total balance of £244 to pay.

He was also handed six penalty points.

Court documents say his “guilty plea was taken into account when imposing sentence”.

Tony Alex Ashworth, of Rhode Lane, Durleigh, was clocked at 53mph.

Ashworth, 45, was fined £604 and must pay a £60 surcharge and £90 in costs.

In total, he must pay £754.

He also had six points added to his licence.

His guilty plea was considered when he was sentenced.

Martin Jeremy Ackland, of Batt Drive, Cheddon Fitzpaine, was caught driving on the road at 54mph.

Ackland, 58, was proved guilty under the single justice procedure.

He was fined £660 and must pay a £66 surcharge and £90 in costs, giving him a total court bill of £816.

He was also handed six penalty points.
