A CAMPAIGN in Bridgwater is driving for an end to unnecessary engine idling.

Idling is when a vehicle engine is left running when parked. Leaving your engine running when parked is illegal and offenders can be subject to a fixed penalty notice.

As Covid restrictions are eased off, remember that air pollution is harmful to our lungs, especially young lungs.

Pedestrians can inhale large quantities of harmful gases, just by walking down the street.

Children and especially babies in push-chairs are much closer to the exhaust emissions and are the most badly affected.

Sedgemoor air quality monitoring does not indicate any areas that exceed recommended levels of air pollution but idling engines and fast acceleration can cause localised contamination in our streets.

Town councillor Glen Burrows said: “We want to raise awareness of the problem and persuade drivers to co-operate. Signs displayed in our busiest streets can remind drivers to switch off their engines when parked.

“We are producing car stickers to encourage idlers to park and stop the engine. This is especially important around our schools”.

Unlike Covid-19, where cases are reported and documented, the harm to health from air pollution is not easily measured.

Breathing affected air makes pre-existing conditions worse and is a trigger for illnesses such as asthma and COPD.
