TWO men were disqualified from driving for six months by Taunton Deane and West Somerset Magistrates' Court yesterday after pleading guilty to speeding offences.

Both men were disqualified from holding or obtaining a driving licence due to "repeat offending". 

They were among several drivers who received fines or were handed penalty points by the court for breaking the speed limit on the county's roads.

Derek McKenzie-Pigg

A man from Meshaw, North Devon, has been disqualified from driving for six months after being clocked driving at 42mph in a 30mph zone in Rooks Bridge, Sedgemoor.

Derek McKenzie-Pigg, of Whitstone Cottages, was driving on Bristol Road (part of the A38) when he was caught by an automatic speed camera on March 3, 2021.

The 61-year-old pleaded guilty under the single justice procedure in December and was disqualified from holding or obtaining a driving licence yesterday by Taunton Deane and West Somerset Magistrates’ Court.

Court documents say McKenzie-Pigg’s disqualification was “obligatory due to repeat offending”.

He was also fined £640 and ordered to pay a £64 surcharge to fund victim services and costs of £85.

Richard Muroi

A Bishop’s Hull man has been disqualified from holding or obtaining a driving licence for six months after pleading guilty to breaking a 30mph speed limit in Othery, Sedgemoor.

He was recorded driving at 38mph on Fore Street (A361) on March 3, 2021.

Muroi, 45 and of Gipsy Lane, was disqualified “due to repeat offending”.

He was also fined £207 and ordered to pay a surcharge of £34 and costs of £90 by Taunton Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday – giving him a total of £331 to pay.

He was disqualified and fined after pleading guilty under the single justice procedure on December 7.

Stephen Newman

Stephen Newman, of Willoughby Road, Bridgwater, was ordered to pay a total of £640 by Taunton Magistrates’ Court for exceeding a 50mph speed limit on the A38.

Newman, 30, committed the offence in a black Range Rover near Thurloxton on March 28, 2021.

Court documents do not state the speed he was driving at.

Newman, 30, pleaded guilty under the single justice procedure on October 21.

Yesterday, he was fined £500 and told to pay a £50 surcharge and costs of £90.

He was also handed eight penalty points.

Kelton Alird Black

An East Huntspill man has been fined £333 for exceeding a temporary 50mph speed limit on the M5 between Taunton and Bridgwater on October 8, 2020.

Kelton Alird Black, 64 and of Withy Road, was clocked driving at 73mph while travelling northbound on the motorway between junctions 24 and 25.

A temporary maximum speed restriction was in place when he was caught by an automatic camera device.

He pleaded guilty under the single justice procedure on June 7, 2021, and he was fined by Taunton Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

He was also ordered to pay a £34 surcharge and £90 in costs, and he was handed five penalty points.
