RESIDENTS in a village near Bridgwater had a shock this week as the water in their rhyne turned orange.

The Environment Agency received reports of discolouration in the Reedmoor Rhyne in Wembdon yesterday (Wednesday, January 19).

They have said this is due to a construction site which was producing silt-laden water.

A spokesperson for the Environment Agency said: "An environment officer attended and traced the source of the pollution two kilometres upstream to a construction site where a drilling rig was producing silt-laden water.

"Using our powers under Environment Act 1995 we ordered the operators to stop the rig and prevent any further pollution of the watercourse.

"We are currently considering appropriate enforcement action."
