BRIDGWATER Town Hall's vaccination centre will close at 5pm tomorrow.

The drop-in centre is offering booster vaccinations to all eligible over 18s, first and second vaccinations to 12- to 15-year olds and 16- to 17-year-olds, and third vaccinations for people with weakened immune systems as part of their primary vaccination schedule.

On its last day, the centre will open at 9am and close at 5pm on Friday, January 7.

The town council has provided the town hall to be used as a pop-up, walk-in vaccination centre free of charge.

Councillor Leigh Redman, mayor of Bridgwater, said: "The people of Bridgwater and the surrounding area have been asking me why there was not a vaccination centre in Bridgwater.

"I worked with the NHS and Public Health to get a vaccination centre in the heart of our town.

"Bridgwater Town Council has given the Town Hall for free to allow a pop-up walk-in Centre, but please hurry as it will close at 5pm on Friday."

Cllr Redman continued: "It’s not too late to get your Covid-19 vaccination or booster.

"Please ‘grab your jab’ in Bridgwater if you can.

"Before you miss this opportunity, walk up and ask if you qualify."

He also thanked "the amazing hard-working vaccination teams and volunteers that are there to make vaccination clinics run as smoothly as possible".

He added: "Please remember to be kind."

Town council leaders attended the town hall this morning to encourage people to receive their jabs.

A total of 71,315 booster vaccinations have been administered in Sedgemoor, and 62.2 per cent of the district's eligible population aged 12 and over had received their booster jab by Tuesday, January 4.

However, Bridgwater's uptake rate is lower.

The Government's coronavirus dashboard shows vaccination uptake by Middle Super Output Areas (MSOAs), which include Bridgwater North, Bridgwater South, Bridgwater East, and Bridgwater Town.

Booster vaccination uptake rate in those areas ranges from 46.4 per cent (Bridgwater Town) to 59.9 per cent (Bridgwater East).

Town council leader Brian Smedley said: "Take-up remains poor and we have to urgently address this.

"To this end, the town council has offered this space for free and we encourage everyone to simply walk up and get vaxxed at the town hall drop-in centre."

Cllr Kathy Pearce added: "I'm delighted that the town council can host this walk-in vaccination centre with no need to book.

"Its central location means it is accessible to all, and I would urge those who haven't already done so to pop and make use of this very local service."
