A RECRUITMENT fair is being held in a bid to find jobs for around 500 Argos staff facing redundancy in the New Year.

It follows the announcement by Argos that it is closing its distribution centre at Junction 24 of the M5 near Bridgwater.

A spokesperson for Sedgemoor District Council said: "There are approximately 500 employees facing redundancy during the first months of 2022, with massive impacts for the workers and their families, as well as affecting Sedgemoor’s local economy."

Immediately after the Argos announcement, the council's skills and employment staff set about assisting the management, unions and employees of Argos to try to find employment for the affected staff.

One of the practical initiatives from the council has been to organise and arrange a recruitment fair at the Argos site on Wednesday, January 12, from 10am to 6pm.

Council staff contacted local businesses and at least 17 local employers - all with live vacancies and ready to recruit - will be present at the fair.
