Hurford is best known for his prowess on the football field where apart from a short spell at Taunton and a season at Frome he spent his career playing mostly as a centre back for Bridgwater Town.

“I joined Bridgwater Town as a player in 1969-70 and have remained involved ever since, taking over as manager in 1985 by which time we had moved to the new ground.

“We had a good run in the FA Cup in 1971-2 before we lost to Reading at the Castle Field and won the Western League championship back in 1980-81.”

During his playing days Hurford once played against the legendary George Best in a ‘Survival Special’ game in March 1983 which was one of the final matches played at the club’s old ground.

“I started playing golf at Enmore in the late 1980s, towards the end of my footballing days and have played pretty regularly. I was club captain on 2003-4.

“We are really lucky to have a course like Enmore so close to Bridgwater, its one of the best parkland courses around, and you struggle to find one that is better in terms of its layout.

"The continuing work on the course over the years has made great improvements, and we are now looking forward to enjoying the benefits of the work that has been on the greens over this winter.”
