HUNDREDS of books and toys have been donated following an appeal by a man who wants to bring Christmas smiles to children throughout North Cumbria who might miss out.

Author Chris Bower, of Brigham, near Cockermouth, is hoping even more will be donated to the drop-off points in Carlisle, Keswick and Cockermouth.

Chris set up the scheme eight years ago. Originally he collected books which were then distributed by the foodbank.

"I added toys last year and that went well," he said.

"It's lovely being able to support families who are undergoing emotional or financial distress."

Over the years he has collected thousands of books. Last year, even with the restrictions of lockdown, he managed to collect more than 700 books and toys.

"So far we have collected 400 toys and books, plus a large box full of colouring pencils to go with colouring books," he said.

"We are hopeful, with the generous support of the people of North Cumbria, that last year’s total will be exceeded.

"The range of books and toys donated so far is wonderful. The books range from first picture books to teenage literature; and the toys range from cuddly toys to Lake District Monopoly.

"A very big thank you to those who have generously given to this year’s appeal."

People can donate new books, ranging from picture books for babies to novels for teenagers. All new toys are welcome.

All the donations will be distributed between: North Lakes Food Bank; Salvation Army Food Bank, Penrith; Carlisle Food; Jigsaw Children’s Hospice, Carlisle and the Salvation Army, Carlisle.

People can drop off at: The New Book Shop and The Toy Shop, Cockermouth; Bookends, Keswick; Hedgehog Books, Penrith; Bookends, Tech n Toys, and Ashbridge and Brown, Carlisle.
