MORE than 100 people attended a public show of concern at a Zebra crossing last Thursday (November 4).

The event was to raise awareness of the dangers of the crossing on Wembdon Rise road.

There have been numerous incidents on the crossing, including one where a young girl was knocked off her scooter.

Wembdon Parish Council (WPC) has spent the past five years trying to get safety measures introduced at the site.

And they have started a petition, which currently has hundreds of signatures, asking Somerset County Council (SCC) highways to introduce speed reduction measures such as speed bumps or chicanes.

"We want to send a big ‘thank you’ to all who supported us this afternoon in our campaign to improve the safety of the crossing," said a spokesperson for WPC.

"We were very pleased to see so many people there.

"Wembdon Parish Council has submitted numerous requests to SCC highways asking for the introduction of safety measures such as a reduced speed limit; replacing the zebra crossing with a traffic light controlled one; installing a raised cushion on the crossing and chicanes either side but SCC has consistently turned these requests down."

WPC has also installed a Speed Indicator Device close to the zebra crossing, which has recorded average speeds of up to 50mph, and maximum speeds of up to 71mph.

SCC said they are taking these road safety matters seriously.

"The zebra crossing is still relatively new and is still being monitored, and we are happy to work with the community to consider their concerns," added a spokesperson for SCC.

Scott Moig, who is supporting the campaign for the speed reduction measures, said it was great to meet supporters face to face on the day.

"Thanks kindly to all that attended the support meeting today at the crossing," he said.

"It was a great show of local support that the issues on the road can no longer continue.

"I do hope that SCC very kindly look into the matter urgently now it’s gained this kind of support."
