A FATHER of a five-year-old who was hit by a car on a zebra crossing is supporting a campaign for speed reduction measures on the road.

Scott Moig, who lives in Wembdon, was walking to school with his daughter Ava on September 22 2021.

They had to cross Wembdon Rise road at the zebra crossing to get to Wembdon St. George’s Church School, which is in Brantwood Road.

As Ava was crossing the road, a car drove round the corner and failed to stop, hitting into Ava's scooter.

Luckily, Ava, who has just had her sixth birthday, did not sustain any serious or life-threatening injuries, she was just in shock.

An Avon and Somerset Police spokesperson confirmed a 20-year-old man has been reported for 'driving without due care and attention following a collision'.

"A five-year-old girl was injured while scooting across a crossing on Wembdon Hill at about 8.50am," a spokesperson said.

"She was on her way to school with her father.

"She was checked by ambulance crew but thankfully her injuries were not deemed like-threatening or life-changing."

And so Scott is taking part in a public show of concern on November 4, alongside members of Wembdon Parish Council (WPC) and parents and families at the school.

"Ava was assessed at the side of the road by the ambulance crew, but luckily it was more shock and bruises," added Scott.

"That road is a death trap, I am not just raising awareness for the safety of my daughter I am doing it for the safety of the residents as well."

WPC has said they have been trying to get safety measures in introduced at the site for the past five years.

These suggestions, which have all been rejected by SCC, include reducing the speed limit to 20mph, installing a pelican crossing, installing a raised cushion or chicanes.

Tony Jay, clerk at WPC, said: “Wembdon Parish Council are extremely frustrated that their efforts to improve the pedestrian safety at the zebra crossing are constantly being thwarted by SCC Highways department.

"County, district and parish councillors will be in attendance at the public show of concern.

"St. George’s Church School is supporting and will be informing all pupil parents that the event will be taking place and encouraging them to attend and show their concern.

"It is anticipated that dozens, or even hundreds of people will be attending, including the injured schoolgirl and her father.”

The public show of concern will be held at the zebra crossing on November 4 at 3.30pm.

A spokesperson for SCC Highways added: “Somerset County Council takes such road safety matters seriously. The zebra crossing is still relatively new and is still being monitored, and we are happy to work with the community to consider their concerns.”
