TWO open spaces in Sedgemoor are two of the best in county.

Apex Park in Highbridge and Marine Cove in Burnham-on-Sea have been given Green Flag Awards.

Chairman of Sedgemoor District Council (SDC), Cllr Alan Bradford, raised the flags at the beauty spots yesterday (October 21).

Apex Leisure and Wildlife Park includes a children's play area, a woodland walk, a lake, an outdoor gym and skate park.

Marine Cove, which was originally part of the Old Vicarage Estate, was opened as formal gardens in 1927.

A spokesman for SDC said: “We have been awarded Green Flag Award status for these much-loved parks for a number of years now but it is especially appreciated during the pandemic which has be a challenging one for so many people using and tending these parks.

“The award honours the staff and volunteers who work so hard to keep our parks looking good.

"We are extremely proud and grateful to those who have helped us retain the award.

"After 18 months that have seen our parks and green spaces play a vital role for people through lockdowns as a place to relax, exercise and meet friends and family safely.

"The news that both Apex Park and Marine Cove Gardens have achieved the Green Flag Award is testament to the hard work and dedication of the team that make the green space a great space that everyone can enjoy.”

The Green Flag Award is run by Keep Britain Tidy and has been going since 1997.

It recognises and rewards well-managed, high quality green spaces that have excellent visitor facilities and is the international quality mark for them.

Green Flag Award Scheme manager, Paul Todd, added: “I would like to congratulate everyone involved in making these parks and green spaces worthy of a Green Flag Award.

“To meet the requirements demanded by the scheme is testament to the hard work of the staff and volunteers who do so much to ensure that they have high standards of horticulture, safety and environmental management and support people to live healthy lives.”

Elsewhere in Somerset, seven parks in Somerset West and Taunton have also been awarded Green Flag Awards.

These include Blenheim Gardens in Minehead, Vivary, Victoria and French Weir Park, and Comeytrowe Park, in Taunton, as well as Swains Lane Nature Reserve in Wellington.
