SEVEN fire engines and multiple specialist support vehicles attended a fire in a property late last night (October 20).

Residents on North Street in Wellington called the fire service after they saw smoke coming from the ground floor.

When crews arrived, around 11.15pm, they confirmed the first floor was well alight. They tried to locate any occupants - as it was not clear if there was anyone inside.

However, there were no casualties.

The fire, which started accidentally, caused 25 per cent fire damage and 100 per cent smoke damage to the property.

"A total of seven fire appliances from Wellington, Taunton, Bridgwater and Wiveliscombe, together with specialist support vehicles from Burnham, Street and Bridgwater, attended the fire in the three storey property," said a spokesperson for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service.

"Crews made good and steady progress bringing the fire under control, which took hold and spread throughout the open building construction.

"Around midnight, they were able to confirm that there were no persons reported, but it took them until 3.26pm to confirm that the incident was under control and the fire was extinguished."

Crews used 10 breathing apparatus, hose reel jets, ladders and thermal imaging cameras to extinguish the fire.

"Once the building and scene was made safe, duty of care was left with the police carrying out scene preservation to allow for further fire investigation," the spokesperson added.
